Yesterday afternoon campers said goodbye to their families and officially kicked off another session at Hosmer Point! After moving into their cabins, some groups played hacky sack while others got to know each other in different ways before enjoying an afternoon snack of ginger cookies. As always, alternatives were available for campers with dietary restrictions.
Next came Opening Ceremony, where campers met all of the staff before heading out on a Checkpoint Challenge. Cabins explored camp together, learning where important places are and getting to know some of the rules that help keep everyone safe and having fun.
Dinner was spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread, followed by one of camp's favorite traditions: clearing games! Instead of assigning cleanup duties, campers competed in silly challenges like finding the person whose birthday is closest to their counselor's, searching for the tallest blade of grass, or giving persuasive speeches about the best rock they could find.
After dinner, everyone gathered for another special ceremony to be sorted into one of the four Cardinal Directions: North, South, East, or West. This competition team stays with campers throughout all of their years at Hosmer Point, making it an exciting tradition for both new and returning campers. We wrapped up the evening with section campfires, where Bay and Point campers gathered at their respective fire pits to sing songs, tell stories, and settle in for the night.
This morning started with cheesy eggs, bacon, and toast for breakfast, with cereal and oatmeal always available as additional options.
Then it was time for swim checks. Safety always comes first at HP! Campers completed a swim assessment to determine their swimming level and received a colored swim tag based on their abilities.
Cabins then headed to the soccer infield to play Koopa Poopa, a camp favorite that combines elements of tag, capture the flag, and plenty of Mario-inspired fun.
Our first round of electives offered something for everyone, including Barn Bouldering, Paddle Boarding, and Clearing Game Training, just to name a few. Lunch featured mac and cheese, sweet potato fries, peas, and our always-stocked salad bar.
This afternoon campers jumped into their PM Focus Areas. Unlike electives, Focus Areas continue throughout the week, giving campers a chance to build skills and dive deeper into their interests. This session's offerings include Beginner Sculling, Advanced Sailing, Board Games, Magazine Making, Hosmer Point Football Club, Farm & Garden, and Country Club.
The rain has arrived this afternoon, but that hasn't slowed anyone down. Campers are making the most of every minute, and we're off to a fantastic start!
